This is aquatic leadership work in assisting a supervisor in directing the provision of aquatic instructional and recreational programs in a multi- purpose aquatic facility. The Aquatic Leader 1 participates in program development and promotion, supervises, checks and participates in the work of a moderate sized group of full-time and part-time subordinates engaged in instructional, lifeguarding, maintenance, custodial and cashiering/clerical work. The Aquatic Leader 1 is responsible for ensuring that all pumps, filters, chlorinators and related water treatment equipment are properly functional, and that established standards of cleanliness and safety are enforced. Participates in conducting lifeguarding and safety training programs for aquatic staff and may participate in the hiring and evaluation of same; instructs staff on emergency procedures. Performs other related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12, supplemented by courses in lifesaving, lifeguarding, aquatics instruction and pool operation and maintenance plus sound related experience including some supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Sound knowledge of the theory and practice of lifesaving, lifeguarding cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid; and of teaching methods and group leadership techniques emphasizing instruction in water safety and aquatic skills. Working knowledge of pool chemistry, water filtration, chlorination, heating and related pool equipment and operating procedures and of the principles and practices involved in implementing, evaluation, organization and offering instructional and recreational aquatic programs. Ability to participate in the planning, organization and promotion of instructional and recreational aquatic programs; to deal effectively and courteously with staff, public and user groups; and to prepare and maintain related records and reports. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Water Safety InstructorAward , Life Saving Instructor Award , National Lifeguard Award, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate, Level C Certificate are required. B.C.R.P.A. Basic Fitness Leader – Aquatics and OFA Level 1 First Aid Certificate are preferred.
