Continuing Studies Department at Emily Carr University of Art + Design is seeking an experienced instructor to teach CEIL 204 Editorial Illustration, an 8-session course (total 24 hours). This course is scheduled Saturday’s, Oct 17 – Dec 5, 9:30am – 12:30pm.
Editorial illustration is the creation of images to accompany text in an effort to illuminate or point to a particular aspect of a story or piece of writing. Through instruction using a variety of traditional and non-traditional media, students will learn to create illustrations for magazine articles, opinion pieces, short fiction and essays. Discussions will include the professional practices of editorial illustrators, how to work with art directors and clients and the different types of illustration that lend themselves to editorial works.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Completing a course syllabus (course content, P/F assessment methods, session schedule)
Communicating with Continuing Studies staff and technicians to confirm necessary instructor and student materials
Delivering dynamic and accessible content via BlueJeans and Moodle online learning and teaching platforms
Providing curricular and technological support to students
Assessing and evaluating students and determining students’ final grade (Pass or Fail)
Ensuring students complete online course evaluations
Engaging in consistent and professional communication with Continuing Studies staff regarding availability, professional development, departmental policy and procedures, curriculum renewal, etc.
Individuals should have a master’s degree and professional experience in Illustration, Drawing, or Fine Art, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, as well as demonstrated passion for and excellence in teaching at a post-secondary level.
We are seeking candidates offering the following skills:
Interest in and preparedness to plan lessons for and deliver course content online via BlueJeans and Moodle. Experience with online education and technology is an asset.
Expert knowledge in professional editorial illustration, with experience in various editorial illustration approaches and related materials or media
Demonstrable experience with contemporary illustration industry and commercial or editorial illustration practices
Experience developing concept, engaging in diverse creative processes and realizing a final product
Experience working with students with different skill sets and diverse creative, cultural, and educational backgrounds
Diverse knowledge in critiquing strategies and student engagement
Post-secondary teaching experience (preferred)
Strong team, organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook) and Adobe Creative Cloud
Presentation skills with the use of Keynote or Microsoft PowerPoint and a projector
