Position: Learning and Behaviour Support Assistant
Wage: Starting at $24.00
Hours per week: 35 hours/week
Job Summary: The Learning and Behaviour Support Assistant participates as a member of the Grade 8 and 9 team and assists in the ongoing planning and implementation of adaptations and strategies as outlined in the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) primarily within the classroom, under the direction of the classroom teacher. The role of the Learning and Behaviour Support Assistant is to provide academic, mental health, behaviour and social emotional support to the students in the Grade 8 and 9 program.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Work closely with the teaching and other school support staff to provide learning and behavioural support to students in the Grade 8 and 9 program in the classroom and on field trips
• Adapt /modify student course work /behavior plan in collaboration with and under the direction of the classroom teacher for students with learning, attention and cognitive difficulties including students on the Autism Spectrum
• Provide direct support to youth with behavioural, emotional or cognitive challenges that are due to mental health or autism spectrum disorder
• Provide encouragement and one to one or small group instruction to students identified as needing adaptations/modifications to their course work
Qualifications and Experience:
• Post -secondary diploma or university degree in related field
• Prefer a minimum of three years of experience providing academic and learning and behavior support to youth with learning disabilities, behavioural, cognitive or mental health challenges or to students on the autism spectrum in a classroom within a high school setting
Job Skills and Abilities
• Possesses genuine commitment and enthusiasm to help youth learn
• Knowledge of and experience with adolescent mental health and autism spectrum disorder
• Ability to tutor or provide small group instruction at a Grade 8 and 9 level in all subject areas
• Ability to understand the learning needs specific to a youth’s cognitive profile, learning style or mental health diagnosis and adapt course work accordingly under the direction of the classroom teacher
• Knowledge of and ability to use appropriate educational technology and assistive/adaptive devices
• Proven success in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with parents, teachers and students with exceptional needs
• Flexibility to undertake a variety of assignments
• Good organizational, interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills
In addition, must be willing to obtain an Emergency First Aid Certificate
